VGA test box
As part of my (Arjan’s) graduation project, I’ve made a box which generates a VGA signal using a microcontroller. Read about it here.

This weekend we moved in to our new studio, at the Iepenplein 15 in Amsterdam east. It’s a very cosy souterain, though still a bit dusty. And there’s no real heating yet… but luckily it’s getting spring.
We have quite a few square meters to solder, code and make all kinds of cool stuff. So expect even more from us in the near future!
We’re at c-base in Berlin as part of the PLANETART group event for the Transmediale09. BOOM! is on exhibit there for the very first time, and after one night only, people already love it.
But, back to the soldering iron because one of the L298N driver chips let out the magic smoke so to speak… luckily there’s a Conrad in Kreuzberg!
We’re busy preparing the retroweek end party, which will be a night with debate and bands, about art, new media and the boundaries of it all. Be sure not to miss it!!
Well.. did this before.. but without having any prove of a working installation.. I redid my prototype and it’s ready now to build the real deal…

We’re already in the agenda for the Transmediale09 partner event @ c-base, berlin! For this event, we are planning to build some 2-axis extensions to our pingpong ball canons for a new interactive installation. More about this soon..
Already 1.5 week ago, we were at the diy*festival in Zürich, with the exhibition running our PING installation. As always, people like it, especially the kids on the “family” themed sunday. Besides PING, we gave a workshop for building a simple, low cost and easy to set up touch screen using the JustPoint software Robin Gareus and me created a couple of months ago.
The touchscreen consists of two USB webcams, which are hung in the corners of a big sheet. On the sheet an image is beamed with back-projection. The cameras look at a small area in front of the screen, detecting any movement by using background-substraction and movement detection. When both cameras see movement (e.g., a hand touching the screen), they will calculate the X/Y position at which the hand is touching the screen, given the 2 locations of the detected hands in the camera image. Very neat tech!
However, the JustPoint program was not very easy to setup on non-linux computers, and after the workshop we decided we would rewrite it, so it works on mac as well: most workshop participants brought mac laptops.
